Beijing: Elections Do Not Change the Fact That Taiwan Is Chinese

The repercussions of the recent Taiwanese election results are ongoing, as China's Taiwan Affairs Office stated today, Wednesday, that the outcome of the election held in Taiwan "does not change the fact that the island is Chinese territory." The official spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, Chen Bin-Hua, said in a regular press conference in Beijing that the election results cannot halt the move towards "reunification."

In this context, the Chinese government stated today that its position of not renouncing the option of using force to bring Taiwan under its control targets foreign interference and a small number of separatists on the island. It added that it is willing to broaden prospects for "peaceful reunification."

The democratically elected Taiwanese government rejects Beijing's claims of sovereignty over the island but has repeatedly offered to hold talks, which have been met with rejection by China. On Saturday, the Taiwanese elected Lai Ching-te from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party as the new president of the country, whom China considers a serious separatist.
