Maersk stated today, Friday, that it "hopes that international intervention and a wider maritime presence in the Red Sea will ultimately lead to the resumption of commercial maritime navigation through the strait." In an email statement, it said: "We hope that these interventions and larger maritime operations will eventually reduce the risk environment, allowing for the passage of commercial maritime navigation from the Red Sea and the return to using the Suez Canal as a route." This comes after American and British strikes last night against military targets of the Houthis in Yemen. Shipping companies have altered their vessels' routes away from the Red Sea, opting for the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope, following intensified attacks by the Iran-aligned Houthis on ships in the region, demonstrating support for Hamas, which is fighting Israel in Gaza.
