Typhoon Koinu, which struck Taiwan with rain and wind last week, is moving south over the sea off the coast of Guangdong Province in China on its way to the tourist island of Hainan, with its intensity remaining almost unchanged from the previous day. As of 10 AM local time (0200 GMT), Koinu had not made landfall on the Chinese coast, maintaining its strength over the waters approximately 455 kilometers northeast of Chaojing City in Guangdong, according to meteorologists. Koinu is still accompanied by storm winds reaching speeds of 144 kilometers per hour and is expected to slowly move south along the Guangdong coast at a speed of five to ten kilometers per hour, gradually weakening as it reaches Chaojing and the southern province of Hainan. Koinu caused one death and injured nearly 400 people in Taiwan last week, causing severe damage to Orchid Island off Taiwan's eastern coast. Chinese authorities remain on high alert, although Koinu is unlikely to move inland toward heavily populated Chinese cities.
