The Joint Chiefs of Staff in South Korea reported that North Korea launched several cruise missiles towards the sea off its western coast on Wednesday, marking the latest sign of rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula. In a statement, the South Korean military noted that the missiles were fired at around 7 a.m. local time (2200 Tuesday GMT), and South Korean and U.S. intelligence agencies are analyzing the launches. The statement also mentioned that additional activities by North Korea are being monitored. This latest missile launch by Pyongyang comes as a unit of the South Korean navy participates in a ten-day exercise along the eastern coast in the Jangwon area bordering North Korea.
