The film "The Overworked," directed by Yemeni filmmaker Amr Jamal, has won another award at the 44th Durban International Film Festival, which concluded today, Sunday, in South Africa. The festival's jury, organized by the Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, awarded Best Screenplay to the film's writers Mazin Rafaat and Amr Jamal. A total of 20 films competed in the feature film category of the festival, which took place from July 20 to 30 in the coastal city of Durban.
Mazin Rafaat told Reuters that this is the latest international award for the film, which has already received a Special Jury Award from the Taipei Film Festival, an award from the Valencia Film Festival, and two awards from the Berlin Festival this year. The film stars Khalid Hamdan, Abeer Mohammed, Samah Al-Omrani, Islam Saleem, Roua Al-Hamshari, and Omar Elias. The story revolves around a couple struggling due to difficult economic conditions in Yemen while raising their three children. Upon discovering her new pregnancy, the wife starts contemplating abortion despite being aware of the social consequences that may arise from this action. This is the second film for the director, who was born in Aden, following "Ten Days Before the Wedding," which was well received by audiences upon its release in 2018 and won numerous awards from international film festivals.
