Pope Looks Hopefully at Relations Between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Pope Francis, in his speech after the Angelus prayer, referred to the seventy-fifth anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and highlighted the "COP28" summit, urging prayer for positive outcomes. He also called for ongoing prayers for populations suffering due to war, emphasizing peace. The Pope expressed his "joy at the release of a number of Armenian and Azerbaijani prisoners," stating that he "looks with great hope at this positive sign for relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and for peace in the South Caucasus," encouraging the parties and leaders to reach a peace treaty as soon as possible. He mentioned that the COP28 discussions on climate, taking place in Dubai, will conclude in a few days and called for prayer for good results in caring for our common home and protecting populations. Additionally, Pope Francis urged continued prayers for those suffering from war. With the Christmas celebration approaching, he asked: "Will we be able, with God's help, to take concrete steps towards peace? It is not easy, we know that. Some conflicts have deep historical roots. But there are also testimonies of men and women who have worked wisely and patiently for peaceful coexistence." He encouraged following their example and making every effort to address and eliminate the causes of conflicts. Highlighting human rights, he called for "the protection of civilians, hospitals, and places of worship, the release of hostages, and the assurance of humanitarian aid," stating: "Let us not forget the tormented Ukraine, Palestine, and Israel."
