Cairo Metro stations announced that the Egyptian Ministry of Transport raised ticket prices today, Monday, by up to 20%. The price for a ticket for a journey not exceeding nine stations is now six pounds (0.19 USD), up from five pounds. The price for a ticket for a journey not exceeding 16 stations is now eight pounds, an increase from seven pounds. The price for a ticket for a journey not exceeding 23 stations is now 12 pounds, up from ten pounds. Metro officials stated that "a new ticket has been added for journeys exceeding 23 stations, priced at 15 pounds." The inflation rate in Egyptian cities reached 34.6% in the year leading up to November.
