Qatar Announces Appointment of Ambassador to the UAE

Qatar announced today the appointment of an ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, following the reopening of the embassies of the two wealthy Gulf states in Doha and Abu Dhabi about a month ago, after years of rupture and tension, according to Agence France-Presse. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt cut their ties with Qatar in 2017, accusing it of supporting extremist organizations in the region and criticizing its closeness to Iran, before signing a reconciliation agreement in Al-Ula, Saudi Arabia, in January 2021. However, diplomatic relations did not return to their previous state immediately.

A statement from the Qatari Emir's office released today, Sunday, indicated that the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, issued a decision "to appoint Dr. Sultan Salmeen Saeed Al-Mansoori as the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to the United Arab Emirates." The statement added, "The decision mandates its implementation and enforcement from the date of issuance and that it be published in the official gazette." No official statement has been released from the UAE as of this time.
