The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin today, following "tense" discussions with energy officials regarding safety at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is controlled by Russia in Ukraine. The Kremlin released preliminary statements made by Putin and Grossi during the meeting held in Sochi, southern Russia, but did not provide details about the subsequent closed-door discussions. The Kremlin stated that Putin informed Grossi he was ready to discuss "sensitive and important issues on the agenda... and do everything necessary to ensure safety in any area where we participate, in one way or another, in the field of nuclear energy." Grossi also met with Alexei Likhachyov, the head of the state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, alongside Putin. The Russian media outlet reported that Grossi described the talks as "tense" but did not go into further details.
