The Iraqi Seismic Monitoring Authority announced today that three earthquakes were recorded in the provinces of Duhok and Kirkuk, in northern and central Iraq. The General Authority for Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring, affiliated with the Iraqi Ministry of Transport, stated in a press release that "our seismic observatories recorded the occurrence of three earthquakes early this Monday in the provinces of Duhok and Kirkuk with varying magnitudes," according to the Iraqi News Agency. The authority urged citizens to "exercise caution, avoid rumors and false news, and adhere to the seismic guidelines issued by the General Authority for Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring."
According to the Iraqi Seismic Monitoring Authority, the strength of the first quake was 4.7 degrees, located 20 kilometers northeast of Tuz Khurmatu in Kirkuk province. The second earthquake had a magnitude of 4.6 degrees and occurred in Duhok province near the Iraqi-Turkish border, while the third quake was near the previous tremor in the same province, measuring 3.1 degrees. This seismic activity in Iraq comes two days after the devastating earthquake in Morocco that has left over two thousand dead so far, along with hundreds of injured and displaced individuals.
