Swedish Sven-Goran Eriksson, former coach of the England national football team, has announced that he is undergoing treatment for cancer and that he expects to live for a maximum of one year. Eriksson led the England national team in the World Cup in 2002 and 2006, where the team was eliminated in the quarter-finals of both tournaments. He has also coached clubs such as Portuguese Benfica, Italian Roma, and English Manchester City during a successful coaching career that has spanned four decades. Eriksson resigned from coaching Swedish club Karlstad in February of last year "for health reasons." The 75-year-old Eriksson stated in a radio interview in his home country, "Everyone can see that I am suffering from a serious illness and everyone expects it to be cancer, and it is. But I have to fight for as long as possible. I know I will live for about a year at most, or perhaps less. The doctors cannot specify a certain date. It is better not to think about it because it brings unhappiness and despair."
