A passenger who arrived late to a Greek ferry died after falling under its propellers following a struggle with two crew members who tried to prevent him from boarding. Disturbing footage showed the 36-year-old victim, whose name has not been disclosed, running quickly towards the giant ferry "Blue Horizon" yesterday, Tuesday. Upon arrival, he jumped onto the ferry in an attempt to board, but was blocked and pushed back by two crew members while the ferry was preparing to depart.
The man attempted to board the ferry again, which was heading to Heraklion on the island of Crete, but this time, the consequences were devastating as the crew members pushed him forcefully back. In horrific scenes, the man lost his balance and fell into the raging sea, struggling to stay afloat, but the power of the ferry’s propellers did not allow him to do so as it appeared they pulled him under. Shortly after, he was retrieved from the water.
Crew members could be seen looking at the man flailing in the water while the ferry continued to sail away from the port. Eyewitnesses reported that the crew pushed the latecomer off the side of the ship because he did not have a ticket. Following this, the Greek Coast Guard stated that when the victim was pulled from the water, he was unconscious and was taken to the government hospital in Nikaia, where he was pronounced dead.
The ferry was ordered to return to the Port of Piraeus after the horrific incident, and the captain and crew members were arrested. Greek Shipping Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis expressed regret over the tragic incident at the Port of Piraeus that resulted in a person losing their life, adding that all necessary actions are being taken by the Port Authority of Piraeus to clarify the case and determine responsibility.
