The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has fined Argentine club Racing Club and Uruguayan Nacional due to racist behavior exhibited by fans of both teams against Brazilian clubs Flamengo and Internacional. CONMEBOL decided to impose a fine of $100,000 on Racing after fans directed racist gestures towards Flamengo supporters during the 1-1 draw on the 4th of this month.
Brazilian media reported that Nacional fans waved bananas at Internacional players and made monkey-like sounds during the 2-2 draw in Porto Alegre, Brazil. In its disciplinary report, CONMEBOL stated that "Nacional fans threw objects during the match, hitting 5 of the home team's supporters."
Additionally, the confederation fined Nacional $100,000 for racial insults and $10,000 for throwing objects.
