Jordan: "Record Number" of Work Permits for Syrian Refugees

Jordan:

In Jordan, it has been announced that over 430,000 work permits have been issued to Syrian refugees since they were allowed to work in various sectors in 2016. A report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees stated, "Last year saw a record issuance of work permits for Syrian refugees, reaching 90,000, which is the same figure reported by the Ministry of Labor."

The Commission mentioned that approximately 430,500 work permits have been issued in Jordan since Syrian refugees were officially allowed to work. The Ministry of Labor grants Syrian workers specific and temporary work permits, which are renewable, "to ensure their presence in the labor market is legal and does not violate labor law provisions, in order to avoid any legal actions regarding this matter."

Syrian refugees have been allowed to work in various sectors since 2016, after the international community committed to financing and expanding trade under the Jordan compact, an initiative aimed at improving access to education and legal work for Syrian refugees who have been forced to flee their homes.
