United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk stated today, Monday, that "the war in Gaza is a powder keg that could lead to a wider war in the Middle East and beyond." Turk expressed his concerns before the Human Rights Council in Geneva, saying, "I am extremely worried that any spark from this powder keg could lead to a massive fire. This would have repercussions for every country in the Middle East and many others beyond." The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights described the military escalation in southern Lebanon between Israel and the Hezbollah group along with other armed factions as "very concerning," emphasizing that "it is essential to make every possible effort to avoid escalating on a broader scale."
