Lebanon's Banks Association Warns After Repeated Attacks

The Association of Lebanese Banks warned that it would be unable to continue its operations if attacks on banks continue. It stated, "Once again, banks are targeted by a wave of assaults on their branches and employees during the most critical phase in Lebanon's history." The association noted that "yesterday, rumors circulated about the intention of banks to close their branches, which the banks denied out of concern for depositors' interests and to ensure the continuity of services for them. However, the assaults continued as if they were systematic, pushing banks towards closure. Moreover, the leniency of the state and its institutions in dealing with the aggressors, despite the threats to employees' lives, encourages the aggressors to persist in their actions, as if the goal is to close banks for an indefinite period."

It considered that "this is not how systemic crises, for which the state was one of the primary causes, are addressed, nor is this how depositors recover funds squandered by misguided policies over the years." The association added, "Banks warn that, given the assaults they are facing, especially against their employees and clients within branches, they cannot continue their operations as if nothing happened. Therefore, banks will be forced to revert to previous regulatory measures if the attacks do not cease, in order to avoid unforeseen consequences." It concluded, "Remaining rational and enacting necessary laws that protect depositors' rights is the only way to a successful resolution."
