Elon Musk responded to U.S. President Biden's calls for bipartisan agreement in the Senate to address the unprecedented levels of illegal immigrant flow at the southern border. Biden issued a statement late Friday, saying that the legislation under negotiation would grant the president new emergency powers to close the border "when it becomes overcrowded," and he would use this authority on the day he signs the bill into law.
However, Musk, a vocal critic of the border crisis, responded to the president's statement posted on his X account. Musk wrote: "No need to pass any laws. All that is required is an executive order requiring proof of asylum application before granting an asylum hearing – that's how it used to be."
Musk, the owner of Tesla, SpaceX, and X, had previously argued that obtaining asylum status after illegally crossing the southern border was as easy as searching on Google. He also agreed with Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor David Sachs, who wrote last night that the border is broken "because this administration refuses to enforce the laws we already have," to which Musk replied, "exactly."
Sachs also posted a video showing hundreds of illegal immigrants arriving at the border, describing Biden's current policy as "open borders," to which Musk commented, "this is undeniable at this point." December witnessed the highest clashes between border patrol and migrants for a single month in U.S. history.
