Who is Hamza Yousaf, the candidate for the Scottish Government?

Scottish Health Minister Hamza Yousaf was elected as the leader of the ruling Scottish National Party, paving the way for him to become the First Minister of Scotland. With Yousaf (37 years old) reaching the position of First Minister, he will also be the first person from an ethnic minority to hold this position in any of the devolved governments of the United Kingdom, and the first Muslim to lead a major party in the country. He competed for the leadership of the Scottish National Party against Finance Minister Kate Forbes and former Community Safety Minister Ash Regan. Yousaf's father is of Pakistani origin and emigrated to Scotland with his family in the 1960s, while his mother was born to a South Asian family in Kenya. Yousaf has often spoken about the racial abuses he faced. He received his education at Hutchesons’ Grammar School in Glasgow, where he was two years younger than Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar. After studying politics at the University of Glasgow, he briefly worked in a call center before becoming a parliamentary assistant to Scottish Parliament member Bashir Ahmad and later to Alex Salmond. He was elected on the SNP list for the Glasgow area in 2011 and was appointed by Salmond as Minister for Europe and International Development just a year later. He became Transport Minister in 2016 after winning the Glasgow Pollok constituency seat from Labour, making him the first candidate from ethnic minorities to win a seat in the Scottish Parliament.
