The Russian news agency Interfax reported, citing a senior defense export official, that Russia will deliver a batch of S-400 anti-aircraft missile defense systems to India within the agreed timeframe. Dmitry Shugayev, head of the Russian Federal Agency for Military Technical Cooperation, stated, "The production of the S-400 Triumph missile systems is proceeding according to the established schedule." He added during a military event that the delivery of S-400 Triumph systems is expected to occur as per the agreed timeline.
India purchased S-400 Triumph air defense systems in 2018 for $5.4 billion and has received three of the systems while awaiting two more. Interfax reported that all deliveries are expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The Indian Air Force mentioned in March that the war in Ukraine has disrupted vital defense supplies from Russia. In recent years, New Delhi has sought to diversify its import sources or rely on domestically produced equipment instead.
India is purchasing French fighter jets, Israeli drones, and American jet engines. However, Russia remains a source of weapon imports worth $8.5 billion out of the total $18.3 billion India has spent on arms imports since 2017, according to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. India is the world's largest arms importer and still heavily relies on Russian technology for conventional weapons, but officials in New Delhi express concerns that the war in Ukraine may cause delays in the timely delivery of weapons and equipment.
