The Iraqi police announced the arrest of a man for selling one of his son's kidneys in Maysan province, southern Iraq. The police leadership stated, "The Maysan Criminal Investigation Department managed to arrest a father who sold one of his son's kidneys in northern Iraq." They added that "information was received about a person residing in Qalat Salih district, southern the province, who forced one of his sons, aged 22, to travel to northern Iraq under various pretexts, including for a trip." The statement continued: "Upon their arrival in northern Iraq and entering one of the hospitals there, which had been pre-arranged with them, he forcibly sold one of his son's kidneys while he was under anesthesia." The trafficking of human organs has increased in Iraq over the past few years, despite Iraqi law criminalizing organ trafficking and imposing penalties of up to life imprisonment for violators.
