Amid Iranian threats to retaliate for the killing of Brigadier General Razi Mousavi, Israel's Cybersecurity Directorate reported that there have been Iranian attempts to launch cyber attacks. The directorate disclosed a new Iranian cyber attack designed to deceive Israeli organizations into downloading malware that steals and deletes information, according to the Times of Israel. In a warning, the directorate stated that phishing attacks are carried out by sending emails that appear to be important security updates from the cybersecurity company F5.
The email contains a link designed to look like a program update, which, when downloaded, will install malware on the computer. It was also indicated that the malware would then steal and delete data from the computer. This comes after Iran accused Israel of assassinating Sayyid Razi Mousavi, a senior military official in the Quds Force, with missiles targeting his home in the Syrian capital, Damascus, after he returned from the Iranian embassy. The Revolutionary Guard vowed that Israel would pay the price for his killing. For years, Israel has been conducting attacks against what it describes as Iran-related targets in Syria, where Tehran's influence has increased since it supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the war that broke out in 2011.
