Drone Shot Down Near U.S. Military Base in Northern Iraq

The Counter-Terrorism Service in Iraq's Kurdistan region announced in a statement that defense systems shot down an armed drone today, Sunday, over Erbil Airport in northern Iraq, where U.S. and other international forces are stationed. A group calling itself "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" claimed it launched the drone to attack what it termed an "occupation base." Security sources reported that there were no injuries or damage to infrastructure. Today's attack followed less than 24 hours after two drones were shot down on Saturday evening near a military base in northern Iraq used by Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga forces and the Harir airbase, which also hosts U.S. troops, according to the Kurdistan Regional Government. A military spokesperson for Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani stated on Sunday that the Prime Minister ordered an investigation in coordination with Kurdish regional security forces and vowed to prosecute those responsible for Saturday's attack.
