British authorities announced today, Friday, that they seized approximately 5.7 tons of cocaine at the Port of Southampton, hidden inside a shipment of bananas from South America destined for Germany. The British newspaper "Metro" reported that the amount of cocaine confiscated at Southampton is enough to supply every man, woman, and child in Britain with two doses.
It is believed the drugs would have had a UK street value of £450 million. NCA investigators believe the haul was heading to the Port of Hamburg in Germany for onward delivery, and inquiries are ongoing to identify the criminal networks involved. The seizure of 5.7 tons of cocaine is the largest ever in the country, marking a significant blow to crime gangs. The previous largest seizure was 3.7 tons of cocaine, also in Southampton, in 2022.
