Indonesian authorities reported today, Monday, that floods and landslides in West Sumatra province resulted in the death of 26 people and at least six others are missing. According to the Indonesian disaster agency, bridges, schools, 280 acres of agricultural land, and nearly 700 homes have been damaged due to heavy rainfall that started since Thursday. The agency stated in a report that "at least 39,000 people have been affected by the floods and landslides in the area." With more rain expected in the coming days, the agency warned of further damage caused by floods and landslides. The rainy season in Indonesia began in January, and meteorological authorities predicted that rainfall would peak in the first quarter, particularly on the islands of Java and Sumatra.
