Clashes in Tripoli Result in 55 Deaths and 146 Injuries

A spokesperson for the Emergency and Support Medical Center in Libya stated today, Wednesday, that the number of casualties from the clashes in the capital, Tripoli, has reached 55 dead and 146 wounded. City elders announced late last night that they mediated an agreement to end the fiercest clashes Tripoli has witnessed in years. The agreement involves the Special Deterrence Force handing over the commander of Brigade 444, Mahmoud Hamza, to a third faction, the Stability Support Agency.

The Special Deterrence Force, which controls Mitiga Airport, detained Hamza while he was attempting to travel on Monday. Airlines that suspended their operations at Mitiga Airport, which experienced some of the most intense fighting, announced they have resumed flights today, Wednesday.

According to the agreement announced by the city elders, police and other security forces that remained neutral during the clashes have moved to the conflict zones. However, the dispute has not been resolved yet. A source in Brigade 444 indicated that military operations might resume if Hamza is not returned to his base.

The major conflict in Libya has paused since a truce between the main opposing factions in the east and west in 2020, but rival factions still dominate most of the territory, and a permanent solution to the conflict appears elusive. The fighting erupted following an uprising that began in 2011, backed by NATO.
