As the conflict enters its seventh month, U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he has no regrets about initiating the war against Iran despite its potential impact on the upcoming midterm elections in November. In an interview with Fox News, Trump responded to a question about whether he regrets the war due to its possible influence on the elections by saying, "I don't believe in the word regret... but you can always second-guess yourself a little."
He further added in the interview broadcasted Thursday night, "If I had to do it all over again, I would do exactly what I did."
After the Elections
Additionally, he reiterated his belief that the war would end right after the midterms, saying, "The war will end immediately after the elections."
Trump dismissed suggestions that some of his supporters are frustrated and disillusioned by the war. He said, "I don't think they are disheartened... I think they are very proud of the fact that I am not allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon."
Trump made a similar statement on Wednesday, claiming Tehran is trying to influence the elections that will determine whether his Republican party retains control over Congress.
These positions come amid rising oil and gas prices due to the war, which has become a key issue for Republicans ahead of the elections.
The U.S. and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28, prompting retaliatory strikes from Iran on Israel and Gulf nations. A preliminary agreement was reached in June, leading to a temporary ceasefire, but it quickly collapsed over several disputes, most notably the management of the Strait of Hormuz.
