After appearing a few months ago in a video reading the Quran to the melodies of the oud, a ruling has been issued against the well-known Egyptian composer. The Nasr City Misdemeanor Court announced today, Sunday, that composer Ahmed Hegazy is sentenced to six months in prison and a 2,000 EGP bail, on charges of contempt of religion. Hegazy had appeared in a widely circulated video on social media a few months ago, reciting verses from the Quran to musical rhythms, which sparked outrage among many Egyptians who considered his actions to be mocking the Holy Quran.
