Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today, Thursday, that David Cameron, the new British Foreign Secretary, arrived in Kyiv and met with him for talks during his first work trip abroad after assuming office. Cameron stated in a video posted by Zelensky's office that he wanted to emphasize London’s support for Kyiv. Cameron, a former Prime Minister of the UK, was appointed as the new foreign minister on Monday.
Zelensky expressed gratitude for this gesture, which comes amid the Middle East conflict, viewing it as a distraction for the world from his country's ongoing war with Russia, which has been ongoing for 21 months with no end in sight. He added, "The world is not focusing on the state of war in Ukraine, and this distraction in focus really does not help."
This comes as Ukraine closely monitors any signs of a reduction in crucial Western financial and military support following the failure of its counteroffensive to achieve any major breakthroughs. Britain has been a close ally of Ukraine in the comprehensive war initiated by Russia in February 2022. Cameron said, "What I want to convey by being here is that we will continue to provide moral and diplomatic support to you, but above all, the military support that you need, not just this year or next year, but for as long as it takes." He added that Britain will work with its allies "to ensure that the focus remains here on Ukraine."
