Netflix has canceled its basic plan in the United States and the United Kingdom that allowed users to watch shows and movies without commercial ads, in an effort to attract more subscribers to its ad-supported plan. The company stated on its website that the basic plan, costing $9.99 per month, will no longer be available for new subscribers or those wishing to resubscribe after a lapse. Current subscribers to the plan can continue using it until they change or cancel their accounts.
The leading streaming platform launched a $7 monthly plan supported by advertisements last November in 12 markets, including the United States, as a replacement for ad-free plans. The platform aims to attract more customers and open a new revenue stream amid intensifying competition for online viewers. In May, the company announced that the ad-supported plan reached nearly five million active monthly subscribers.
