Zahlé Sanitary Landfill Prepares for Solar Power Operation

The Zahlé sanitary landfill has entered a phase of generating clean energy to meet its operational needs. With a grant provided by the Kuwait Development Fund, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a contract to secure the necessary equipment for the landfill with a contractor expected to complete the installation within three and a half months, above the existing sorting hangar in the southern part of the Zahlé sanitary landfill. The solar energy generation equipment will be installed according to studies suggesting an operational capacity of up to 159 kilowatts, which is sufficient to ensure the operation of the landfill and all its equipment, leading to savings on the electricity bill, which is currently paid at least 80 percent. This will be particularly beneficial if operations are organized to focus during peak production hours. Consequently, a coordination meeting was held with the working team and representatives from the UNDP along with the mayor of Zahlé - Maalaka and Taanayel, where a work plan was established in complete coordination with the municipality, which will assume direct responsibility for the equipment once the work is completed, ensuring that the installations and their maintenance are guaranteed for at least one year.
