A student armed with a shotgun and a handgun opened fire in a high school in Iowa on the first day of the new school year, then committed suicide. The incident resulted in the death of a sixth-grade student and injuries to five others, while a State Criminal Investigation official stated that the shooter, a 17-year-old student at Perry High School, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Among the five injured was Perry High School principal Dan Marburger, during the incident that occurred Thursday as students returned from winter break. Authorities identified the shooter as Dillon Butler but did not provide information regarding a potential motive. It was reported that Butler possessed a shotgun and a small-caliber pistol. Mitch Mortvedt, the assistant director of the state investigation division, confirmed in a press conference that authorities also found a homemade explosive device. Mortvedt added that the motives of the suspect are under investigation, and authorities are examining "a number of posts on social media" made by Butler shortly before the shooting. A source familiar with the investigation indicated that federal and state investigators are interviewing Butler's friends and analyzing his social media profiles.
