Earthquake of 5.6 Magnitude Strikes Mindanao Island in the Philippines

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook Mindanao Island in the Philippines today, Saturday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The earthquake occurred at a depth of ten kilometers. In a different reading, the Philippine seismic monitoring agency reported the earthquake's magnitude as 5.9 at a depth of 27 kilometers. They added that they do not expect damage, but aftershocks are possible. Authorities stated that rescue workers searching for dozens of missing people in a landslide earlier in the town of Makway in the Davao de Oro province of southern Philippines had to halt their operations due to the earthquake. Heavy rains have fallen in the region in recent weeks, leading to flooding and landslides.
