Bloomberg reported yesterday, citing informed sources, that the coalition government of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has agreed to double German military aid to Ukraine next year to eight billion euros ($8.54 billion). The report added that if the German parliament approves this plan, where Scholz's government parties hold the majority, this increase would raise German defense spending to surpass the two percent of GDP target pledged by all NATO members. Bloomberg noted that lawmakers from the Social Democratic Party, the Free Democratic Party, and the Greens agreed to intensify negotiations on the proposed federal budget for 2024 this week. The German Ministry of Defense could not be reached for immediate comment. Some EU countries oppose the bloc's plan to spend up to 20 billion euros ($21.4 billion) on military aid to Ukraine.
