Political circles have been focused on tracking the results of the quintet meeting for Lebanon, held in the French capital, Paris, with representatives from France, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Qatar, without any announced outcomes. The participants limited themselves to issuing a recommendation for the necessity of electing a president for the republic without delving into names of presidential candidates, as the important factor for them is Lebanon's readiness to help itself by starting to implement the promised reforms.
In this context, political sources commented on the meeting's results, stating they did not expect more than what was relayed through the media, especially after retreating from promises to implement reforms in electricity, forming a regulatory body, organizing the judiciary, and unifying the exchange rate, among other items that remain mere ink on paper. The sources pointed out, according to "Al-Anbaa" electronic news, that the countries concerned with assisting Lebanon, primarily those that participated in the meeting, have not perceived any advancement from Lebanon since the parliamentary elections in May; instead, it has been continuously retreating and has not taken any step towards helping itself, at least due to its irresponsible conduct regarding the presidential entitlement and the election of a president for the republic.
Therefore, friendly nations cannot assist in achieving this entitlement, which ultimately remains the responsibility of the parliament. Thus, as long as the official Lebanon continues to abandon the role of its institutions and the approval of reforms, it will remain on the track of political tremors and crises. Consequently, the Paris meeting reaffirmed that Lebanon is not a priority for international concerns; currently, there is no external political dynamic to provide momentum for the presidential entitlement, placing political forces before their responsibilities to Lebanese the entitlement, which is what Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt is attempting to accomplish through his initiative to save the country.
