Iraq: Export of 6 Crops to Gulf Countries

The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture revealed today, Monday, the mechanism for opening borders for crop importation, while confirming the export of six crops to Gulf countries. In a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), ministry spokesman Mohammed Al-Khazali stated, "The agricultural calendar program aims to balance supply and demand in the market and maintain price stability."

He explained that "the ministry opens imports for crops when they are scarce in the markets and stops them when there is an abundance of local crops," indicating that "many crops have achieved self-sufficiency and have thus been exported to Gulf countries, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, watermelons, various types of fodder, and dates."

He added that "the mechanism for opening imports aims to address shortages of goods in local markets," noting that "the technical committees deployed in wholesale markets in Baghdad and the provinces submit daily reports on the market situation and prices, and based on this, appropriate recommendations are made to the Economic Cabinet to take necessary decisions regarding opening or closing borders."
