Today, Miley Cyrus's song "Flowers" received the award for the best-selling single in the world for 2023, marking the first time the American singer-songwriter has topped the list managed by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). "Flowers" won the award just weeks after Cyrus received two Grammy Awards. The lyrics of the song, set to a disco beat, revolve around a breakup and remind the singer that she can buy herself flowers after the end of the romantic relationship. The federation stated that paid subscription services have streamed the song the equivalent of 2.7 billion times. The London-based federation uses data from actual sales and digital delivery methods to arrive at a representative figure. Artists from Nigeria and Mexico entered the top ten list for the first time. American star Taylor Swift, who won the Best Global Recording Artist award for the fourth time from the IFPI, ranked seventh and ninth in the singles list with her songs "Cruel Summer" and "Anti-Hero." The IFPI represents the recorded music industry worldwide.
