English Premier League club Everton announced on Friday that it has "filed an appeal against the penalty imposed on it by the league, which involved a 10-point deduction due to financial violations." Everton was penalized with a 10-point deduction last month after it was found to have breached profitability and sustainability regulations in the league.
Everton stated in a release: "Everton Football Club has today submitted an appeal against the Premier League committee's decision to deduct 10 points from the club's total." It added: "The case will now be referred to an appeals body for review."
The Premier League mentioned earlier this month that "Everton admitted to violating profitability and sustainability rules during the hearing." This penalty is the largest of its kind since the inception of the Premier League. Everton described the deduction, which caused the club to drop from 14th place to the relegation zone, as disproportionate to the offense and unjust.
Everton fans protested the penalty during the 3-0 loss against Manchester United last week, with thousands of supporters raising pink banners in Goodison Park that read "Corrupt" under the Premier League logo before the teams entered the pitch.
