Boxer Amanda Serrano, featherweight champion, reported that she nearly lost her sight due to the chemicals in a hair braiding gel after her title defense match against Naine Monk was canceled for next Saturday. Serrano, from Puerto Rico, had to withdraw from the match after failing a medical test.
Serrano (25) told the audience, "I wanted to fight in front of my people. I am truly sorry from the bottom of my heart... I can barely see with my eyes." She later wrote on Instagram, "I was ready to fight, and all real boxers were too." She added, "The doctor said 'no, I can't participate,' and that frustrated me... I had an allergic reaction in my eyes due to the chemicals in the hair gel."
The former champion was set to face her competitor Monk in a 12-round fight, with each round lasting three minutes.
