Italy Arrests 14 After Riots at Migrant Detention Center

Italian police announced on Monday that they "arrested 14 people following riots at a migrant detention center near Rome after the suicide of one of the detainees." They clarified in a statement that "three police officers were injured during the riots that occurred on Sunday when detainees managed to break out and storm a parking lot, setting mattresses on fire." The police deployed tear gas in an attempt to regain control of the Ponte Galeria center, which is a detention facility for irregular migrants near the main airport in Fiumicino. The organization Coalition for Freedom and Civil Rights "SILD" stated that "migrants detained in these centers are deprived of adequate healthcare and legal rights." Police unions complained about insufficient security and expressed concerns about potentially more severe consequences in the future.
