French President Emmanuel Macron stated in a press release today, Friday, that his country, along with Germany and Poland, does not intend to initiate escalation in Ukraine. During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the French president confirmed the "clear and steadfast resolve" of the three countries "to do everything possible, as long as necessary" to prevent Russia from winning the conflict in Ukraine.
Macron said, "We will continue to support Ukraine and its people as long as necessary, and we will do so as we have since day one, and we will not take the initiative for any escalation." The day before, Macron emphasized in a television interview that France would not take the lead in military operations in Ukraine, adding at the same time that his country is prepared to respond to any potential escalation from Russia and "make decisions to ensure it does not win."
