Toyota Motor announced today, Tuesday, that it sold a record 11.2 million vehicles in 2023, retaining its position as the world's best-selling car company for the fourth consecutive year. The Japanese automaker reported a 7.2% increase in global sales last year, which includes sales from its truck unit Hino Motors and small car manufacturer Daihatsu, supported by record overseas sales totaling 8.9 million vehicles. Earlier this month, German competitor Volkswagen Group, which ranks second, announced a 12% increase in deliveries last year to 9.2 million vehicles, reflecting a recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic with easing supply chain bottlenecks. Sales of Toyota's original vehicles, including those under the Toyota and Lexus brands, reached a record of 10.3 million vehicles in 2023. Hybrid vehicles that run on gasoline and electricity comprised about one-third of that total. Battery electric vehicles made up less than one percent.
