TIME magazine has selected Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and the appointed president of COP28, as one of the 100 most influential people in the climate sector. In an interview with TIME this week, Al Jaber stated that “the gradual reduction in reliance on fossil fuels is inevitable... it is essential.” From Al Jaber's perspective, the success of COP28, alongside broader efforts to combat climate change, relies as much on embracing the private sector and changing market conditions. TIME noted that Al Jaber has adopted a different approach from previous COP presidents by inviting oil and gas companies and prioritizing climate solutions within the private sector.
The Vice President of the UAE and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum remarked, “Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, President of COP28, is on TIME's list of the 100 most influential people in the climate sector.” In a post on his official X account, he stated, “Sultan Al Jaber is on TIME100's list of the 100 most influential people in the climate sector… we are proud of his international achievements and his accelerated activity in this vital sector… and we are proud of all the accomplishments of the UAE's youth in all sectors.”
