Authorities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil have reported at least 11 deaths after a tornado hit the area on Friday. The state government stated in a press release: "The storm caused heavy rainfall and helicopters are flying over flooded areas searching for 20 people who are still missing," adding, "Authorities have conducted 2,400 rescue operations in the past two days." The town of Cara, with a population of over 8,000, was the hardest hit along the tornado's path. State Governor Eduardo Leite, who visited the area, expressed concern about the situation in Cara, stating: "It is essential that we are able, in an organized manner, to identify the main affected areas as well as the individuals who urgently need support." Many residents in the affected areas have sought refuge in sports facilities in their cities, and authorities have issued warnings of potential landslides in several areas.
