Sigourney Weaver Wins International Goya Award

American actress Sigourney Weaver won the International Goya Award on Saturday, in recognition of what the Spanish Film Academy described as an impressive career during which Weaver has delivered "independent, complex, and strong female characters." Speaking before a star-studded audience at the Goya Awards ceremony in Valladolid, northwest Spain, Weaver stated, "I am always looking for stories about women and for them, to remind us of women's strength in all creative fields." The jury praised Weaver's brilliance, charisma, and talent, which have shone through in her roles in dramatic films like her portrayal of primatologist Dian Fossey in "Gorillas in the Mist" and in comedic roles such as her part in "Ghostbusters." Weaver, 74, who is famous for her role as Ellen Ripley in the "Alien" film series, is the third recipient of this honorary award, following Cate Blanchett and Juliette Binoche, who were honored since its inception in 2022.
