UNIFIL: Without Freedom of Movement, We Cannot Carry Out Our Duties

Candice Ardil, the Deputy Spokesperson for UNIFIL, stated that "the incident of assault on the international forces is a violation of international law, Resolution 1701, and Lebanese law," referring to incidents in the towns of Taybeh and Kafr Kila. She emphasized the necessity of granting UNIFIL freedom of movement to be able to carry out its tasks, expressing concern over developments in the south that could lead to unprecedented escalation. Ardil pointed out that "we are continuously cooperating and coordinating with the Lebanese authorities regarding the two incidents this week, and it is extremely serious for us because the personnel are peacekeepers here in southern Lebanon to ensure stability and peace in the region, and any assault against them is taken very seriously as it violates international law, Resolution 1701, and Lebanese law. We have requested the Lebanese authorities to investigate this matter to prevent its recurrence because the men and women are present here in southern Lebanon to support the people and ensure a return to the previous situation." Regarding the topic of freedom of movement for international forces, Ardil considered it "of utmost importance that we have freedom of movement; otherwise, we will be unable to implement Resolution 1701, which aims to restore stability and security to Lebanon, and without freedom of movement, we cannot carry out our duties."
