US President Joe Biden held Russian President Vladimir Putin responsible today for the death of Alexei Navalny, stating that he was "not surprised" but "felt anger" after the Russian opposition leader's death. Biden said at the White House after Russian prison officials announced Navalny's death, "We don’t know exactly what happened, but there is no doubt that Navalny's death was the result of something done by Putin and his gangs." He added, "The Russian authorities will tell their story... but don't be fooled, don't be fooled, Putin is responsible for Navalny's death." He mentioned that he is "thinking" about taking further steps to impose sanctions on Russia following Navalny's death, praising the opposition leader for standing "courageously" against the "corruption" and "violence" of Putin's government. The White House is still seeking more information about Navalny's death in a penal colony in northern Siberia, where he had been sent less than two months ago. Navalny, 47, was one of Putin's most prominent critics. Biden had said in statements after meeting with Putin in Geneva in June 2021 that Navalny's death would have dire consequences for Putin.
