How to Avoid a Bread Crisis in Case of War

Minister of Economy and Trade in the caretaker government, Amin Salam, discussed with the heads of bakery and oven unions in Lebanon the best mechanisms to avoid bread crises should the situation in the south escalate. The following points were agreed upon: "Ensuring the supply of flour to bakeries that meets the daily needs of each bakery, with an additional week’s reserve from the allocated share for each bakery. The security committee responsible for monitoring the supply situation, headed by Minister of Economy and Trade Amin Salam, will adopt a specialized statistical program established some time ago regarding the needs of each bakery and the population density in its area and their consumption needs for bread."

The attendees noted that "in the event of a security disturbance leading to a demographic change in the population of any area, the share for that area would be redirected to areas of displacement and refuge. Additionally, there is a push to secure additional flour reserves at mills for several days in case of any emergency." Salam clarified that there are "discussions with all relevant officials to import two ships of wheat, averaging 60,000 tons from Russia, to ensure sufficient food reserves for several months. Efforts are also underway with the leadership of UNIFIL to help facilitate the continued entry of wheat and fuel ships in the event of any maritime blockade."
