Russian President Vladimir Putin stated today, Tuesday, that he opposes the deployment of nuclear weapons in space and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu firmly denied any plans for such deployment. A source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday that the United States informed Congress and its European allies about new intelligence concerning Russian nuclear capabilities and attempts to develop weapons to be deployed in space. Shoigu mentioned that the U.S. claims about Russian intentions are aimed at frightening U.S. lawmakers and pushing them to allocate additional funds to counter Russia. Putin added that Russia's activities in space are no different from those of other countries, including the United States.
