Maliki Responds to Sadr's Call for Boycott of Upcoming Elections

The leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, considered that elections are the best way to achieve the desired goals for reform, indicating that preventing people from voting means preventing them from shaping their future. Maliki stated in a speech at the broad forum for candidates of the State of Law Coalition held in Baghdad that "the call to refrain from participating in the elections opens the door for corrupt individuals to reach positions of responsibility in the provincial council or parliament," noting that "the ballot boxes determine the will of the people." He reaffirmed that "broad participation in the elections represents the people's will through the ballot boxes."

He pointed out that "those who prevent people from participating in the elections are hindering them from contributing to shaping their future," explaining that "change and reform occur through elections since they are a national constitutional entitlement, and absence from the elections will not achieve partnership and reform but will create an imbalance among the components."

Maliki emphasized the "necessity of adhering to the list, stating: We are committed to our list and its name, State of Law, because a state without law is chaos." He asserted that "it is our duty to defend Iraq, its government, and parliament, and we must avoid conflicts that weaken the state."
