Iraqi Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadhil stated that Baghdad will complete the connection with Kuwait's electricity grid by the end of 2024 and will begin receiving 500 megawatts of electricity as the country seeks to diversify its energy sources, which heavily rely on Iran. Fadhil mentioned that the connection with Kuwait is currently 45 percent complete. He added that Iraq has finalized its electricity grid connection with Jordan, and Baghdad only needs approval for financing to start transferring an initial 50 megawatts of energy. Iraq currently imports between one-third to 40 percent of its electricity and gas needs from Iran, but still suffers from widespread power outages, especially during the summer months when temperatures reach 50 degrees Celsius and energy consumption peaks.
